Patents, industrial designs, trademarks, copyright and trade secrets are 5 intellectual assets in Canada.

The patent is a bundle of rights to make, use, sell, and market an “invention” which is granted by the government to the inventor.

Industrial designs  are about how things look. They are the visual features of shape, configuration, pattern or ornament, or any combination of these features, applied to a finished article.

Trademarks are used to distinguish between products and make them unique. It is one or a combination of words, sounds or designs used to distinguish the goods or services of one person or organization from those of others.

Copyright provides protection for literary, artistic, dramatic or musical works and other subject-matters. It gives u right to copy a work.

Trade secrets include any valuable business information that derives its value from the secrecy.
